Donor Shield’s comprehensive living donor support and protections are listed below
We Provide Lost Wage Reimbursement
Donors protected by Donor Shield are eligible for lost wage reimbursement. Lost wage reimbursement includes up to six weeks of lost wages, with a maximum reimbursement of $1,500 per week. Reimbursement beyond the initial two weeks requires additional clearance from the transplant center.
We Provide Travel & Lodging Reimbursement
Donors protected by Donor Shield are eligible for donation-related travel and lodging reimbursement for the donor and a caregiver. Travel and lodging reimbursement is capped at $2,000 in combined travel and lodging expenses for the donor and a caregiver.
We Provide Donation Life Insurance
Donors protected by Donor Shield are automatically given a donor life insurance policy with a $500,000 principal amount.
We Provide Donation Disability Insurance
Donors protected by Donor Shield are automatically given a donor disability insurance policy covering issues related to the kidney donation. The policy includes up to $1,500 per week in disability coverage for up to 365 days after surgery subject to the donor's last 12 months of earnings and a 30-day waiting period.
We Provide Legal Support
Donors protected by Donor Shield are provided legal support if they are unlawfully terminated from their job or have a problem with their health insurance due to their donation. Generally, most employers and insurance companies are supportive of living kidney donation. Some employers (e.g., Federal Government, National Kidney Registry, etc.) offer paid leave to employees that donate a kidney. However, there have been situations where employers are not so supportive, and in one case the National Kidney Registry was instrumental in winning a wrongful termination case when a donor involved in an NKR swap was fired for legally taking time off to donate their kidney. We also understand that some donors, after they donate, lose their health insurance or see health insurance premium increases solely due to donating a kidney. These situations are very rare, but can occur, in which case they are addressed through Donor Shield’s legal support protection.
We Provide Coverage for Uncovered Complications
Donors protected by Donor Shield are covered for any costs related to uncovered complications. Generally, all of a donor’s medical costs related to kidney donation are paid for by the recipient’s medical insurance. However, sometimes insurance companies try to avoid paying these costs by limiting the coverage period following the donor surgery, leaving the donor to pay for these medical costs themselves. While these instances are rare, they do happen. Through the Donor Shield program, donors are never required to pay for post-surgical complication costs that are related to kidney donation, including any co-pays.
We Provide Reimbursement for Travel, Lodging & Lost Wages for Uncovered Complications
Donors protected by Donor Shield are eligible for travel, lodging and lost wage reimbursement for treatment of any donation-related complications in the rare case they have a post-surgical complication. Lost wage, travel and lodging reimbursement for donation complications meets the same criteria for donation-related lost wage, travel and lodging reimbursement.
We Offer Protection Against Discrimination When Buying Life Insurance
Donors covered by Donor Shield are protected from unfair pricing or rejection by life insurance companies, which sometimes discriminate against living donors. This discrimination is unfair, and in some states, illegal. If you attempt to purchase life insurance and are denied coverage or are quoted an inflated price due to your status as a living kidney donor, Donor Shield will offer legal support and access to reasonably priced insurance.
